Joe Geib Quote
"What I really liked most about studying Meteorology was the maps, radar, and satellite. On many occasions, I have been found completely engrossed in maps. I can just sit and gaze at maps for hours. I have turned this interest into a career in GIS (Geographic Information Systems). After my 2001 graduation, I worked at the Center for Remote Sensing (CRSSA) in the ENR building. There, I refined my skills and interests, and took a few more courses in order to round myself out in the fields of ecology and natural resources. In 2002, I worked in Colorado to help work on the Hayman Fire recovery effort (137,000 acres - largest wildfire in CO history). There, I worked with the USDA's NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service), using my GIS, hydrology, and ecology skills to help landowners recover from the fire. I created and managed the GIS system to map the progress of our rehabilitation practices and government reimbursement. I also used my meteorological, hydrological, and ecological skills to proved in-field technical assistance to landowners. In the field, I instructed them about the change in hydrology (more runoff, flash floor risk due to hydrophobic soils and decreased time of saturation) and the ecological comeback in a post-fire landscape. I also calculated flood risk for landowners living in flood-prone areas, incorporating peak runoff, time of saturation, etc. I also had the opportunity to participate in NRCS' monthly winter snowpack surveys. I went out at the end of each snowy month and measured the snow depth and water content at pre-determined sites in our area. These readings are incorporated into water budget forecasts in the arid west. This is a very imperative practice out west, where population soars and the water resources remain (climatologically) low. At this job, I have really been able to tie together all my meteorological, ecological, hydrologic and geographical skills together. I have accomplished what my customized education package had intended. After this experience, I continued to work for private industry in engineering and cartography, as well as in government. I continue to make maps and update GIS information."
