The Joint Doctoral Degree Program in Exposure Assessment is a collaborative effort between the Rutgers Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. It provides a unique opportunity for students to obtain training in human exposure assessment. The degree is jointly conferred by Rutgers University and UMDNJ-RWJMS.

The Exposure Assessment Program educates students in the multifaceted science of exposure assessment that includes:

sampling strategies,
characterizations of sources and concentrations of pollutants,
time-concentration profiles of individuals for epidemiological investigations,
mathematical models of personal exposure and source-receptor relationships,
new methods of measuring inhalation, ingestion and dermal exposure,
and chemical biological markers within the general population and sensitive sub-groups.

Students in the Program have access to state-of-the-art laboratory equipment for biological analysis, chemical analysis and mathematical modeling, which is an integral part of the program. These facilities permit measurement and prediction of how, when, where, and why exposures from the environment occurs, enter an individual, and are dispersed throughout the body. Computer models are also used to predict how contaminants are distributed throughout large populations. These capabilities lead to studies that provide a scientific basis for making public health decisions.
