Dioxins and Related Substances: Are Regulators Measuring the Right Chemicals?
Simon Litten
New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NY DEC)

Most chemicals are regulated as individual compounds. Dioxins, however, are treated as toxicologically related substances. Most regulatory programs look at 17 substances and a few include 29 chemicals. The list  can reasonably be expanded to include thousands of dioxin-like compounds few of which are measured. Bioassays may be able to bridge the gap.
