 Environmental Sciences Seminar Abstract

Organohalogen Compounds In The Environment From The Micro To The Macro Scale
Dr. Lisa Totten
Department of Environmental Sciences
Rutgers University

Organohalogen compounds have myriad uses, including applications as solvents, flame retardants, electrical fluids, and pesticides, to name only a few. This class of compounds, which includes PCBs, chlorinated ethylenes, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, are therefore ubiquitous contaminants. This seminar will discuss the fate and transport of such compounds from the sub-molecular level, using computational chemistry to predict their reactivity and degradation products, to the regional scale of predicting their fate in systems such as the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary and the Delaware River Basin. Applications of computational chemistry and quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) to the design of remediation systems and to the understanding of environmental degradation rates and pathways will be discussed.
