 Environmental Sciences Seminar Abstract

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Persistent Toxic Substances(PTS)---New Focal Area of Global Environment Facility (GEF)
Professor Xiaobai Xu
Research Center for Eco-Environmental Science the Chinese Academy of Sciences

XU, Xiaobai [Academician (Environ. Chemist/Inorganic Chemist), Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) since November 1995]

Professor Xu graduated in 1948 from Department of Chemistry, Chiao-Tung University and has been involved in research since 1948 in Institute of Chemistry of Academica Sinica; Institute of Physical Chemistry, Institute of Applied Chemistry, Institute of Chemistry and Institute of Environmental Chemistry, CAS. She is now research professor and advisor of Ph.D. students in Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, CAS. She was a visiting scientist in UC Berkeley from 1980 to 1982, and had later short visits of 2-3 months as a visiting professor in 1986, 1991, and 1994. She is member of National Committee of Environmental Monitoring and SGOMSEC Member under SCOPE. She is also the editor of several journals.

Her research fields include environmental chemistry, environmental analytical chemistry, isolation and identification of environmental carcinogens, atmospheric organic pollutants, endocrine disruptors, biomarkers and risk assessment (eco-toxicology), fate of toxic chemical substances, especially persistent organic pollutants in the environment, energy-related environmental studies, and incineration of solid waste.

She also published 3 monographs or special issues and more than 180 papers in the related field. One paper published in Anal.Chim.Acta. 163 174(1982) had been cited at least 118 times, “ Isolation and identification of mutagenic nitro-PAH in diesel-exhaust particulates”, by X.B.XU, J.P. Nachtman, Z.L.Jin, E.T.Wei and S.M.Rappaport. She was the chief PI of the NSFC Major Project: Environmental Behavior and Ecological Effects of Typical Chemical Pollutants PAHs, nitro-PAHs, PCBs PCDD/Fs, etc. (1992-1996).

Since late 1970’s, she has received many honors and awards from Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Natural Science Foundation Committee: Honors from CAS 1978 (three); Awards from CAS, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1999(1st CLASS); the 4th National Natural Science Prize (3rd Class) 1990, and two other national awards, HL ( S & T) Prize (2001).
