Why wind energy?

This talk will introduce the audience to the reasons why wind energy is such an important player in our current and future energy mix. Not only several aspects of the Earth system will be explored, from the carbon cycle, to ocean acidification, to fossil fuels, but also population growth and GDP will be introduced to give a sense of the massive challenge that building a green economy really is. Wind will then be evaluated in terms of its global potential, variability, effects on climate, and limitations, including the potential contribution of Airborne Wind Energy, a relatively new concept in wind turbine design. Some preliminary findings on the potential benefits of offshore wind farms to protect coastal communities during hurricanes will be presented as well.
