Evaluation of Stationary
Source Emission Capture, Transport, and Testing Systems

Instructor: R. Manganelli, PhD
Course Overview
Learning Objectives of Emission Capture and Gas Handling
- The student will be able to delineate a process
flow sheet and describe the pollutants, how they are generated, and what can be done to
prevent or reduce their quality and quantity.
- The student will be able to:
1. List the type of hoods and describe how each functions and the proper
operation.
2. State the transport velocities needed in ducts and determine
friction and
SP losses.
3. List the classes and types of fans used and important fan law
relationships.
- Measurement:
The student will develop hands-on skills in
the use of instruments such as the pitot tube and manometers to make valid measurements of
SP, VP, and TP, and interpret the results as to the operation of the collection facility.
- Through demonstration the student will develop
the ability to apply principles and measurements to address problems arising in the
capture and collection system and how to resolve these operational problems.
- Inspection:
By practice in the laboratory, field, and by demonstration, the student will:
1. Develop skills in observation of emission capture and gas handling
systems
2. Be able to critically assess the operation through interpretation of
measured parameters and to:
a. Judge what the problems may be
b. Determine their location
c. Solve the problem
- The student will be able to apply the principles
and practices of source sampling to the activities and responsibilities of an official
observer.
- The student will be able to describe the facility
operation and operation cycle, carry out a pre-test meeting, develop a testing protocol
including methodology, test site requirements, supporting needs, safety, and sample
handling, check calculations, prepare a final report, and detail all items to be checked
during observation of a source sampling test.
