COMMUNITY-BASED GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE, A RUTGERS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION URBAN EXTENSION INITIATIVE
The Camden green infrastructure initiative took a unique approach to incorporating green infrastructure into an urban community and launched a multi-faceted program with the people of Camden to use green infrastructure to beautify the city as well as mitigate environmental concerns. Most green infrastructure programs are top-down initiatives that are organized and managed by large governmental bodies. Instead of following this conventional method, the RCE Water Resources Program focused on a bottom-up approach by first gaining community support through informative meetings, educational workshops, and demonstration projects. This initiative has become the foundation for a state-wide RCE green infrastructure initiative that has worked with communities throughout New Jersey to plan, design, and install green infrastructure practices.
