NIST's work in supporting PFAS measurements
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency in The Department of Commerce, provides a wide range of reference material for quality assurance and quality control of measurements pertaining to organic pollutants in environmental and human matrices. NIST reference materials are produced to be homogeneous, stable, and with SI-traceable quantitate values for individual organic compounds. The class of organic contaminants per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) present measurement challenges to the analytical community that potentially affect the accuracy and precision of quantitative measurements. This talk will highlight the work NIST has done to help make PFAS measurements more accurate. In addition to making PFAS measurements more accurate, NIST has also worked with other federal and state agencies to understand PFAS contamination in wildlife (beluga whales, American alligators, Hawaiian cetaceans, ect.), soils/sediments, and water. Some of this work will also be discussed.
