How do slow changes in Earth's orbit influence climate over  geologic time?

The shape of Earth's orbit undergoes slow and subtle changes over tens of thousands of years that have effects on climate. What are the mechanisms that are involved in the response of climate to these changes? We are working to answer this question in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Miami and NOAA, with support from the National Science Foundation.
